Advent Day 4

Sin Separates Us from God

Read: Isaiah 53:6 (entire verse) and Isaiah 59:1-2

Special Verse: We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. – Isaiah 53:6

Discuss: How do you feel when you do something wrong or hurt someone?  How do you feel when someone you love is far away?  Our sins separate us from God and that makes Him very sad because He loves us.  How do you think He might fix that?

Advent Day 3

Sin Enters the World

Read: Genesis 3:8-15 and Isaiah 53:6a, or read “The Terrible Lie” passage from The Jesus Storybook Bible

Special verse: All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way;. – Isaiah 53:6a

Discuss: What is sin?  Do you sin?  Do you think God still loves us if we sin?

Advent Day 2

Creation of Man

Read: Genesis 1:26-28

Special verse: So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
– Genesis 1:27

Discuss: We read yesterday that Jesus was with God from the beginning. This is where we come into God’s great love story! What do you think it means to be made in the image of God? How is this different from the plants, land, water and animals God created?

Advent Day 1

The Word and the Light

Read: John 1:1-5

Special verse: In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. – John 1:4

Discuss: Who is the light of men?  The bible says Jesus was with God in the beginning, even before God made the earth!  What do you think it means to be a light in darkness?  Can you think of some special lights we see this time of year?

Family Advent Study

Our hope is that, through this simple advent study, we can remember the long story of Jesus and celebrate His birth as the long-awaited promise fulfilled.  Starting Sunday we will post a bible passage, a special verse and some simple discussion questions each day. If you have a copy of The Jesus Storybook Bible, that may come in handy for some of the passages. (If you attend Riverside and would like a copy, let Jen Hahn know.)  Each daily study should take between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on the age of your children and their input on the discussion questions.  If you have an advent wreath, integrate the study into the lighting of the candles each night.

Check back here Sunday, or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
