Advent Day 2

Creation of Man

Read: Genesis 1:26-28

Special verse: So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
– Genesis 1:27

Discuss: We read yesterday that Jesus was with God from the beginning. This is where we come into God’s great love story! What do you think it means to be made in the image of God? How is this different from the plants, land, water and animals God created?

Week 1 Craft: See instructions on how to make a colorful votive holder here.  We recommend using a battery operated tea light for younger kids.

Sunday School Lessons for Nov. 29, 2015

This week our PRESCHOOL classes learned about a brave hero named Daniel from The Jesus Storybook Bible’s “Daniel and the Scary Sleepover.’” Daniel obeyed God even when he was spied on, tricked and thrown into a lion’s den.  His love for God and God’s faithfulness to Daniel made other people believe in the one true God!

Grade School lessons are listed below with the Story Symbol.  Each week kids will be shown a Story Symbol that is a visual reminder of the Bible lesson.  If your family uses the God’s Big Story Cards (contact Jen Hahn to order) you can look up these symbols in your pack of cards to continue Sunday’s conversation at home.  Come back each week for the new Story Symbol, Bible lesson and memory verses for this unit.

Advent Day 1

The Word and the Light

Read: John 1:1-5

Special verse: In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. – John 1:4

Discuss: Who is the light of men?  The bible says Jesus was with God in the beginning, even before God made the earth!  What do you think it means to be a light in darkness?  Can you think of some special lights we see this time of year?

Week 1 Craft: See instructions on how to make a colorful votive holder here.  We recommend using a battery operated tea light for younger kids.

Family Advent Study Begins Sunday

Advent is a season of remembering and anticipation.  Our traditional family celebrations can be much the same; pouring over old family photos, sharing favorite stories of silly relatives, and eagerly awaiting a delicious meal or the exchange of gifts.  As we celebrate the birth of Christ we are reminded that His story is long.  It starts at THE BEGINNING.  And the hope, joy, love, and peace that the Light of The World brings to the darkness is something to long for, indeed!

Our hope is that, through this simple advent study, we can remember the long story of Jesus and celebrate His birth as the long-awaited promise fulfilled.  Starting Sunday we will post a bible passage, a special verse and some simple discussion questions each day. If you have a copy of The Jesus Storybook Bible, that may come in handy for some of the passages. (If you attend Riverside and would like a copy, let Jen Hahn know.)  Each daily study should take between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on the age of your children and their input on the discussion questions.  If you have an advent wreath, integrate the study into the lighting of the candles each night.

Week 1 focuses on the theme of Light.  If you would like to do a craft with your family this week, here is a link to a colorful votive holder. (We recommend the use of a battery operated tea light for younger kids.)

Sunday School Lessons for Nov 8, 2015

This week our PRESCHOOL classes learned about Psalm 23 from The Jesus Storybook Bible’s “The Good Shepherd.” During our game of Sheep Golf kids took turns, herding their sheep into a pen with a “staff.” Forceful hits, and the sheep would bounce and roll to the other side of the room. Gentle nudges and the sheep were easily guided to the safety of their pen. This is how God loves His children. He is our gentle guide and protector.
